Technical University of Delft

Founded in 1842, the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft) is the premier technical university in the Netherlands. It is a leading university internationally, including, for example, 47th worldwide in the QS WUR 2024 list. They are responsible the education of 27000 students and 3500 PhD candidates. Of the eight faculties, the Mechanical Engineering (ME) faculty will be the primary contributor to the MOWSES project. Of ME’s seven departments, Maritime and Transport Technologies (M&TT) and Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) departments will contribute to MOWSES. M&TT advances many aspects of fundamental understanding of technologies related to maritime and transport technologies, including topics related to safety of ships and offshore structures against extreme limit states and manufacturing of relevant structures. MSE develops knowledge on sustainable processing and usage of resources while addressing materials lifecycle, structure, properties and functionality from a physics- and chemistry-based perspective.

Role within MOWSES

TU Delft is leading two work packages in MOWSES: WP3 (Thermomechanical welding simulations) and WP6 (Prediction of early failure in the HAZ of welded structure made of green steels). WP3 will use an experimental technique whereby steels will be subjected to thermal cycles similar to that of welding. Once they have been subjected to their thermal history, the steels will be evaluated to assess their mechanical and microstructural properties, including fracture mechanisms. WP6 will extend the experimental database measured in other MOWSES WPs by first calibrating a numerical model of the fracture mechanics, then by using the calibrated model to predict conditions that were not directly measured.
