Clean Steel Partnership
The Clean Steel Partnership (CSP) under the European Commission’s Horizon Europe program, is a collaborative initiative aimed at decarbonising the European steel industry. It aligns with the EU’s broader climate objectives, particularly the European Green Deal, which aims for climate neutrality by 2050. The partnership brings together steel producers, plant builders, research institutions, universities and policymakers to develop and scale sustainable steelmaking processes while ensuring the sector remains globally competitive.
MOWSES is closely linked to the Clean Steel Partnership through its consortium partners, who are members of ESTEP, the private arm of the partnership. Key partners like OCAS/ArcelorMittal, Dillinger, RWTH, and UGent actively contribute to the partnership’s objectives. MOWSES is part of the "Energy Applications and Engineering" focus area of the Clean Steel Partnership.
Goals of the Clean Steel Partnership
1. Decarbonisation of Steel Production
Reduce CO₂ emissions in steel production by up to 80-95% compared to 1990 levels by 2050.
2. Technology Development
Foster research and innovation to develop new, low-carbon technologies for steelmaking, such as:
- Hydrogen-based steelmaking
- Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS)
- Circular economy practices like enhanced steel recycling
3. Sustainability and Competitiveness
Ensure the European steel industry remains competitive globally while transitioning to more sustainable production methods.
4. Infrastructure and Policy Support
Collaborate with policymakers and industry leaders to ensure the necessary infrastructure and regulatory frameworks are in place for large-scale implementation.
