Onderzoekscentrum voor Aanwending van Staal NV

OCAS NV (OnderzoeksCentrum voor de Aanwending van Staal) is a leading market-oriented research centre specialising in steel and metal-based products, services, and solutions for global metal processing industries. As a joint venture between the Flemish Region and ArcelorMittal Belgium, as well as one of the global R&D centres of ArcelorMittal—the world’s largest steelmaker and a leader in sustainable steel production with over 150,000 employees worldwide—OCAS is involved in various ArcelorMittal R&D activities including steel plates and welded structures.

With state-of-the-art laboratories in Zelzate and Zwijnaarde (Belgium) and a highly skilled team of over 150 international researchers and engineers, OCAS addresses key societal challenges, with a particular focus on materials for energy, durability, and environmental sustainability. By combining multi-disciplinary expertise, advanced equipment, and innovative approaches—such as AI-driven combinatorial tools—OCAS remains at the forefront of technological advancements, shaping a more sustainable and resilient future.

Role within MOWSES

OCAS will coordinate the project and will be the work package (WP) leader for the heavy gauge demonstration welding trials (WP7). OCAS / ArcelorMittal will be involved all along the project, contributing to the selection of materials (WP1), their production at the laboratory scale (WP2) and the thermomechanical welding investigations until the final WP.
